About Service by Design
Approximately 80% of the UK economy comprises services. Even manufacturers require a service-wrap. All organisations should recognise that they have a service to deliver. That means that this process can be applied to all types of organisations.
We can all remember a bad service experience!
Consumers are increasingly aware of service and so it is becoming more important and even a point of differentiation for organisations. Taking time to reflect on the service or service-wrap that the organisation delivers in a systematic way is a sound investment. The University's Innovation Mentors act as critical friends helping organisations do this.
The Birmingham City University Service by Design programme, co-developed with Engine Group, a leading service design agency, was originally funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The programme aimed to raise awareness of the potential for a service design approach to improve process effectiveness and business opportunities in the public, not for profit and private sectors.
The objectives of Service by Design are two-fold:
- To raise awareness and demand in organisations in all sectors in reviewing and improving their offering to external clients.
- To build capacity and capability within Birmingham City University to develop strategic relationships with companies, voluntary and public sector organisations through the Service by Design engagement approach.
